"Upp Games. Basic Health and Safety skills on Works at Height through Serious Games" comes to continue the work done in Health & Safety Games, the initiative that also led the joint entity from October 2015 to September 2017, by which a mobile application (app) was developed to improve the learning of basic skills in Health and Safety, through educational games, together with partners from Germany, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Romania.

On this occasion, the seven partners from Spain, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Italy, Slovenia and Belgium focus on the development of a mobile application for learning occupational risk prevention for work at heights.

Common objectives

Through the exchange of experiences and the analysis of common training needs of the countries of the Upp Games consortium, the project aims to:

  • Define a framework of theoretical and practical learning of the main risks, risk factors and preventive measures for work at height, in which, from the beginning, trainers, students and experts in Vocational Education and Training (VET) participate.
  • Address training on the risks faced by professionals working at heights, using online training tools and Open Educational Resources (OER) -Open Educational Resources (OER)- that allow autonomous learning of skills and competencies in prevention of occupational hazards.
  • Propose an innovative educational approach through development, testing and implementation of training games, through an application for mobile devices (app).
  • Design a roadmap that establishes the standards and the necessary steps to recognize the content of the proposed training, in accordance with the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) and the European Credit System for Vocational Education and Training (ECVET), which guarantees mutual recognition of competences in all participating countries, in accordance with the recommendations of the European Quality Assurance in Vocational Education and Training (EQAVET) to support learning that is acquired through non-formal and informal contexts.
  • Provide autonomy, exploitation and transfer to the learning and training processes that are achieved during this initiative, even beyond the end of the project's life cycle.

Benefit for trainers, students and professionals

Undoubtedly, the use of new technologies applied to training offers important benefits, beyond the ubiquity of access that mobile applications allow.

The development of Upp Games will allow low-skilled workers in the construction industry to easily improve their knowledge and skills in Health and Safety issues, using the new application, especially in work at height.

The providers of Vocational Education and Training (VET) of construction will also be favored, since they will modernize their didactic contents with this new tool, better adapted to the requirements of the companies.

In addition, throughout the implementation of the project, VET students and apprentices of construction -as a target group with which they will work during the phases of the initiative- will be able to acquire new skills adapted to the needs of the labor market during their apprenticeship.

For their part, VET trainers and teachers of construction will also have at their disposal an open, clear, dynamic, innovative and easy to use resource to improve and develop the educational games of the application, adjusting them to the target group in each teaching process.

Upp Games places the trainers as key players, not only for the educational use of the games developed for the app, but also as autonomous "developers" of their own digital tools for training, either improving the games created within the project, or creating their own games, guided by a specific guide for them. In this way, VET teachers and trainers will acquire and improve their ICT skills, in accordance with the new demands of the learning environment, contributing to their professional development and updating, while having an educational resource to innovate their pedagogical approach.
